The Rick Herrema Foundation
RHF is non-profit organization that supports military families. Its namesake, Sergeant 1st Class Rick J. Herrema, was killed in action in Iraq in 2006. Herrema was known for his selfless service to his family, friends, and community. RHF is focused on helping create strong military families. To support this vision, they founded Rick’s Place, a 50- acre greenspace in Fayetteville, near Fort Bragg, NC. The mission of Rick’s Place is to “provide fun, quality activities for the Military Family to strengthen relationships and to build community.” Rick’s Place is a developing retreat center that can alleviate the stress of military life and give families a place to reset and recharge.

The Inventory and Assessment
With collaboration from many NC State departments, we hope to complete an in-depth natural resources inventory and assessment of Rick’s Place. Currently, there are teams dedicated to surveying plants, amphibians, reptiles, mammals (including bats), and birds. There are also students interested in making habitat management recommendations, conducting a stream assessment, and creating interpretive materials for use at Rick's Place. My role in this project is coordinating team leaders for each inventory component with volunteers and RHF staff. Additionally, I will be responsible for providing RHF with a final report, detailing our findings, explaining recommendations, and presenting other products.
